What does it take to build new concrete steps in Carlsbad?
Concrete steps construction in Carlsbad means building a new set of steps up to your door. They're either poured in place in forms or set as precast steps made ahead of time. Either way you get a solid, even way in and out, though you'll use another door while the new concrete hardens.
Most people call us when the old steps have cracked, pulled away from the house or started chipping at the edges, or when a new door needs steps that weren't there before. The price moves with the type you pick, how many steps it takes to reach your door, how wide they are and whether we're tearing out old ones first. The schedule mostly turns on the permits and the weather on pour day. When I come out, I'll measure your entry and give you an estimate for your own steps. We're based in Carlsbad and work in Artesia and the other cities around it.
How do you know your concrete steps need replacing?
Steps pulling from the house
A gap opening between the top step and the wall usually means the ground under the steps has settled or washed out. That gap lets water in behind them, so the tilt tends to get worse the longer it sits.
Cracks across the treads
A hairline crack along a joint is normal, but cracks that widen, run across a tread or let a piece rock underfoot mean the steps have lost their footing. Waiting turns a loose piece into a trip hazard and a bigger tear-out.
One step feels off
If one step feels taller or shorter than the rest, people will catch a toe on it, guests most of all because they don't know it's there. That's a problem with how the steps were built, not wear, and it won't fix itself.
How we build concrete steps
We tear out the old steps if there are any and dig down to firm ground, then pack the subgrade, the dirt and gravel the steps sit on, because steps set on loose fill settle and tip away from the door. We set the forms so every step is the same height and depth through the whole flight, since a step that's off by a little is the one people trip on. Rebar, the steel bars inside the concrete, holds the steps together if they ever crack. We pour, give the treads a broom finish, a light brushed texture so shoes grip when they're wet, and pitch them just enough to shed water away from the house. Then I'll tell you plainly that the stairs are off limits while they cure, which is the slow hardening that gives concrete its strength. If the budget gets tight, I'd rather save on the finish than on the base, because nobody sees the base on day one but you can't fix it later without tearing the steps out.
If the steps lead up to a new house or an addition, they're usually planned with the slab foundation building or the foundation installation, so the top step meets the door at the right height. Doing it all in one project also saves a second round of digging.
Precast steps
Precast costs less, so it suits a standard entry and a tighter budget. The trade-off is that you're picking from the sizes that are made, so they work best where the door height and width are ordinary.
Poured steps
Poured steps cost more, but they come in more sizes because we build the forms to fit your entry. They suit tall entries, wide doors and odd corners where a precast set won't line up.

What happens after you call about new steps
From your first call to the day the steps are ready to use, here's who does what and what you'll know at each stage.
Call or send the form
You call (575) 266-8153 or send the form, and we reach back out to set a time for me to come by. Tell us whether you're replacing old steps or adding new ones.
I look at your entry
I check the ground, measure the rise to your door and walk you through your choices. You get an estimate for your own steps, so you know the cost before anything is dug.
We handle permits, then pour
Once you're ready, we take care of the permit side that falls to us and plan the pour around the weather. My crew and I do the digging, forming and pouring together.
We go over curing together
Before we leave, I go over curing with you, the wait while the concrete hardens. Plan on keeping everyone off the steps and using another door until then.
Why Carlsbad homeowners call us for their steps
I give every estimate myself
I come out to look at the job and give the estimate myself, and then my crew and I do the work together. The person who explains your steps is the one standing there on pour day.
Taught on my dad's crew
I grew up pouring concrete next to my dad, and we've been in business since 2020. I still explain each job before we start, because when you know what's normal you can judge the finished steps with clear eyes.
Licensed, insured and easy to check
We're fully licensed and insured. The city expects contractors to hold a New Mexico state license and a city business registration, and you can call the City of Carlsbad Building Department to check any contractor's license before you hire, us included.
Before you pick precast or poured, it helps to have your entry measured and the ground under it checked. Send a request or call (575) 266-8153 and I'll come take a look.
Concrete steps, grading and permits in Carlsbad
Steps mean digging and pouring, and the city has a say in both. The city requires a building permit before construction starts, and for most development it also wants a drainage and grading permit before land is dug, filled or paved. Large parts of Carlsbad sit in mapped floodplains, where any construction needs a floodplain development permit, and the floodplain managers at the city's Planning and Regulation Department can tell you whether your lot is in one. Before we dig, I check with the city on what your job needs and take care of the permit paperwork that falls to us.
Most step calls we get here are front and back entries where the old steps have settled or cracked, and the first thing I look at is what's left under them. We do the same work on jobs in Artesia and across Carlsbad.
Questions about concrete steps in Carlsbad
How much do concrete steps cost in Carlsbad?
Concrete steps usually cost about $100 to $500 per step across the US, which is a national figure and not our price. Precast tends to come in lower and poured higher, and precast prices change with how tall and wide the steps are. I'll give you a figure for your own entry when I come out.
Should I pick precast or poured concrete steps?
Pick precast if price matters most, and look at poured if you need a particular size. Precast steps are hollow and go together faster, while poured steps cost more but come in a much wider range of sizes.
How long does it take before you can walk on new concrete steps?
Plan on three days to a week before anyone uses the stairway, because the concrete needs that long to harden. Misting the steps lightly now and then while they cure keeps them from drying too fast and cracking.
Do I need a permit to build concrete steps in Carlsbad?
Plan on one, because the city requires a building permit before construction starts. A lot in a floodplain needs its own permit too, which is why I ask about it early.
How long do concrete steps last?
Concrete steps last about 30 to 40 years with proper care and upkeep. That long life depends on looking after them, so plan on some upkeep from the start instead of waiting for trouble.
How do I add concrete steps to an existing concrete slab?
The usual advice is to keep the new steps separate from the slab, so if the slab cracks, the crack stays out of the steps. I look at how your slab sits before we plan the steps against it.
Other concrete work that ties into new steps
Slab foundation building
For a new house, garage or addition that sits right on the ground, we pour the slab with a packed base and planned joints so it holds up.
Foundation installation
When a house or addition needs footings and walls under it, we dig, form and pour the foundation so everything built on top, steps included, starts level.
