Why homeowners and builders choose Carlsbad Concrete

Concrete holds up better when the person paying for it understands what's going in. Each reason here comes back to that, so you know what you're getting and what to expect once it cures.

  1. Every choice explained first

I walk you through thickness, steel, finish and joint layout before we start, so you know what you're paying for and why each piece is in the job.

  2. The estimator works your pour

I come out to look at the job and give the estimate myself, then work right alongside my crew, so the person you talked with is the one on site.

  3. Joints and curing done on time

We cut control joints, the grooves that give a slab a planned place to crack, before stray cracks can start, and we give curing the time it needs instead of rushing you onto it.

  4. Straight talk about cracks

New concrete shrinks as it settles in, and a hairline crack along a joint is normal. We'll show you what that looks like, so small things don't worry you and real problems don't get brushed off.

Concrete services for homes and properties in Carlsbad, NM

Carlsbad Concrete is a concrete contractor in Carlsbad, NM, and we handle 16 kinds of work, from new driveways and patios to slabs, footings and parking lots. Most calls start with something cracked, sinking or holding water, or with a builder who needs solid ground under a new building. The price usually turns on the size and thickness of the slab, how much digging and base work the ground needs, the steel, the finish you pick and how easy the site is to reach. The schedule turns on the permit side, the weather and curing, the wait while new concrete gains strength before you use it. I'll work out your own figure when I come out to see the job.

  • Concrete driveway with a black car, bordered by dark stone strips and green lawn, seen from above.

    Concrete driveway building

We dig out, pack the base and pour new driveways for your home, thick enough for the vehicles you park and sloped so water runs away from the garage.

  • Large stamped concrete patio beside a brick-and-siding house, patterned with rectangular stone-like sections.

    Concrete patio construction

Want a solid spot for a table and grill out back? We pour patios with a broom finish, a light texture that helps keep feet from slipping.

  • A stamped concrete patio with rectangular stone-like patterns borders a lake, with a block seating wall and patio chairs.

    Stamped concrete services

Stamped concrete is pressed with a pattern and colored to look like stone, brick or tile, for patios, walks and driveways where plain gray won't do.

  • Pebble-finish concrete steps and walkway lead to a stone-front home, bordered by shrubs and black metal railings.

    Concrete sidewalk building

We build walks from the driveway to the front door and around the side of the house, set so water drains off them instead of toward your foundation.

  • Concrete patio beneath a white pergola beside a light-colored house, with garden beds and broad steps.

    Garage floor concrete

A garage floor carries cars, tools and the odd oil spill, so we pour it on a packed base with joints placed to keep cracks where they belong.

  • Wet decorative concrete patio with irregular stamped-stone patterns beside a wooden fence and garden beds.

    Decorative concrete

Decorative concrete covers color, exposed stone, scored lines and custom finishes, for homeowners and businesses who want the slab itself to be part of the look.

  • A stamped concrete patio with a wood-grain pattern surrounds a fire pit and seating, edged by a low stone retaining wall.

    Concrete retaining walls

Is a slope washing into your yard or eating away at your patio? A poured concrete retaining wall holds the soil back and gives you level ground to use.

  • Overhead view of a square stamped concrete patio with a diagonal tile pattern beside a house and lawn.

    Concrete floor installation

We pour interior concrete floors for shops, warehouses, additions and homes, finished smooth or textured for how the space gets used each day.

  • Light-colored concrete pool deck surrounds a turquoise swimming pool with tiled edges and entry steps.

    Concrete pool decks

Pool decks have to drain and stay grippy when they're wet, so we slope them away from the water and finish the top for bare feet.

  • Broad concrete steps lead to a brick home entrance, with brick sidewalls topped by light concrete caps.

    Concrete steps construction

We form and pour concrete steps for front doors, back porches and slopes in the yard, with even rises so each step feels the same underfoot.

  • A wide concrete sidewalk runs beside a brick building, bordered by lawn and shrubs, with black handrails along the steps.

    Slab foundation building

What will your new home, shop or garage sit on? Often it's a slab foundation, which we pour over a graded, packed base with steel set inside.

  • A large concrete driveway with grass-filled joints leads to a modern home with tiled roofs and two garage doors.

    Foundation installation

We build foundations for new homes, additions and commercial buildings, working from the builder's plans and the ground we find once the site is dug.

  • A curved stamped-concrete walkway with dark edging winds through a landscaped front yard beside a house.

    Concrete parking lot building

Property owners and businesses call us for concrete parking lots, built thick enough for daily traffic and graded so rain runs off instead of sitting in low spots.

  • A long concrete driveway runs between stucco homes, with gravel borders and a raised paved area behind a block retaining wall.

    Concrete footings

Footings are the wide concrete base under walls, posts and foundations. We dig and pour them for builders and property owners so the load spreads into firm ground.

  • A broad concrete front porch and entry steps meet a paved walkway beside a stone-and-siding house, with rock landscaping and shrubs.

    Foundation raising

When a slab or foundation has sunk and left cracks or uneven floors, we lift it back toward level and look at what let the ground drop.

  • Freshly poured concrete sidewalk slabs are cordoned off with yellow caution tape beside strips of grass.

    Concrete cutting

Need a doorway, trench or clean edge in existing concrete? We saw-cut slabs, walls and driveways for repairs, plumbing runs and new openings with straight lines.

Concrete work in Carlsbad, along the Pecos River

Carlsbad sits along the Pecos River, and a lot of everyday life here happens near the water, from the boat docks, playgrounds and picnic tables at Lake Carlsbad Recreation Area to the Riverwalk Recreation Center on the riverbank. Up in the hills, the Ocotillo Hills Nature Trail climbs to a city overlook, and Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park keeps the plants and animals of the Chihuahuan Desert close to home.

That river shapes concrete work here too. The city says large parts of Carlsbad lie in the Pecos River, Dark Canyon or Hackberry Draw floodplain, and any construction in a floodplain needs a floodplain development permit, so before you plan a slab, footing or foundation, ask one of the city's certified floodplain managers whether your lot is in one. We're based in Carlsbad, so I look at where the water goes on your lot before we ever talk about the pour.

Questions about concrete in Carlsbad, NM

Why do concrete driveway quotes in Carlsbad vary so much?

Quotes usually differ in what goes under the slab, because digging out soft dirt and packing a solid base takes time and material that a cheaper bid may skip. Ask each contractor how deep they dig, what they put down and how they pack it. I'll walk you through ours at the estimate.

Where can I save money on a new concrete patio or driveway?

Save on the finish, not the base, because the subgrade, the ground the slab sits on, is hidden on day one and is the hardest thing to fix once concrete covers it. A plain broom finish costs less than stamped or colored work and still holds up. When budgets get tight, base work is the first thing people want to cut, and it's the one I'll push back on.

How long until I can walk or drive on new concrete?

You can walk on new concrete well before you can drive on it, and I'll give you both waits for your slab when we go over curing, since they depend on the thickness and the weather. Curing is the stretch when concrete keeps gaining strength, and driving on it too early can crack it. We'll set the pour date with you so you can plan where to park.

Does a concrete contractor need a license in New Mexico?

Yes, the state requires a license for anyone who does or offers construction contracting, and contractors working in Carlsbad also need a City of Carlsbad business registration. The state licensing division handles contractor licenses. You're welcome to check ours before you hire.

Does my concrete project need a permit in Carlsbad?

It may, and the city's building department is the place to ask, because it oversees the permits required before construction starts in Carlsbad, along with plan reviews and inspections. For most development, the city also requires a drainage and grading permit before grading, paving or digging. We check with the office that handles permits where you live before work starts and take care of the paperwork that falls to us.

Do you guarantee your concrete work?

Our work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee. No crew can promise concrete won't ever crack, so I'd rather tell you up front what's normal and what's worth a call.

Will my new concrete slab crack like the old one did?

A slab with a packed base, steel inside and joints cut on time is much less likely to crack the way a rushed one does, though a hairline crack along a joint is normal. Rebar, the steel set inside the slab, holds the pieces together if a crack does open. Most old slabs we replace failed because the base was raked level instead of dug out and packed.

Can you pour concrete in hot weather in Carlsbad?

Yes, but we plan around the heat, because concrete that dries too fast at midday can leave a weak, dusty top later. That's why we set the pour time with the weather in mind and keep the surface from drying out too quickly while it cures. If a day looks wrong for it, I'll tell you and we'll move it.
