Should you resurface your pool deck or pour a new one?

A concrete pool deck is the slab around your pool, and at Carlsbad Concrete we build them in Carlsbad, NM, by digging out and packing the ground, setting forms and steel, then pouring and finishing a surface that gives wet feet some grip.

If your old deck is cracked or settling, the first question is whether it has to come out at all, and I'd rather tell you resurfacing will do than sell you a pour you don't need. The price mostly turns on how big the deck is, whether old concrete has to be broken out and hauled off, how much ground prep the site needs and the finish you pick. The schedule turns on the permit, the weather on pour day and the curing time, which is the wait while the concrete hardens before anyone uses it. For your own number, I'll come out, look at the deck and give you an estimate.

How can you tell your pool deck needs work?

  1. Cracks running across sections

A crack that wanders through the middle of a section, away from the cut lines, usually means the ground under it moved or the joints weren't cut in time. Left alone, water works into it and the edges start to chip and lift, so a small fix turns into a section that has to come out.

  2. Slabs that sank or tilt

If one slab sits lower than the next, or water pools and runs toward the house instead of away, the base under it has usually settled because it was raked flat instead of packed. Every rain and splash-out washes a little more out, and a raised edge is easy to trip on barefoot.

  3. Rough, dusty or flaking top

A top that sheds powder or flakes off in patches often comes from a pour that dried too fast in the heat, which leaves a weak skin. If the slab under it is still sound, this is when resurfacing is worth a look, before the wear goes deeper.

How we build a concrete pool deck

If you already have a deck, I start by looking at whether resurfacing makes sense, because a worn top on a sound slab doesn't always need a new pour. For a new deck, we break out what's there, dig down to firm ground and pack the subgrade, the dirt and gravel the slab sits on, then check where the water runs so the deck sheds it away from the house and the pool. We set the forms, lay in rebar, the steel that holds the slab together if it does crack, and plan the pour around heat and wind so the concrete doesn't dry out too fast. Once it's finished, usually with a broom finish, a light brushed texture that keeps wet feet from slipping, we cut control joints, shallow grooves that give the slab a planned place to crack. If the budget gets tight, I'll trim the finish before I'll trim the base, because the base is buried on day one and it's the part that decides whether your deck stays flat.

A pool deck often ties into other work around the yard. If there's a drop between the deck and the house or the yard, we can handle concrete steps construction in the same job so the levels line up, and if you're adding a pool house, we do slab foundation building for that too.

  • Resurfacing the deck you have

This suits a deck whose slab is still solid and level but whose top is worn, stained or rough. It skips the tear-out, and I'll tell you at the estimate if your deck is a good candidate.

  • Tearing out and pouring new

This suits a deck that has sunk, tilted or cracked through, because those problems start in the ground and a new top won't fix them. We start over from the base up.

  • A new deck around a new pool

This suits a pool that's just gone in, where we can plan the base, the slope and the joints from scratch. It's the easiest time to get the drainage right.

What happens after you call about a pool deck?

Here's how a pool deck job runs from your first call to the day we pack up, and what you'll know at each step.

  1. Call or send the form

Reach us at (575) 266-8153 or through the form, and we'll set a time for me to come out. It helps if you know roughly how big the deck is.

  2. I walk the deck with you

I look at the site, check whether resurfacing would do and go over your choices for a new deck. You get an estimate for your deck before anything is scheduled, so you can decide on your own time.

  3. We sort permits and plan

We take care of the permit paperwork that falls to us and pick a pour day around the heat and wind. If the weather turns, we'd rather move the pour than rush it.

  4. We pour and explain curing

My crew and I pour, finish and cut the joints, then clean up. Before we leave, I go over curing with you, including when the deck is ready for use.

Why Carlsbad homeowners call us for pool decks

  1. The owner gives your estimate

I come out to look at your deck and give the estimate myself, and then my crew and I do the work together. The person who explained the plan is the one standing there on pour day.

  2. In business since 2020

I grew up pouring concrete beside my dad on his crew, and I've run this business since 2020. A lot of what I learned there was about the ground under the slab, which is where most deck trouble starts.

  3. Licensed and insured, easy to check

We're fully licensed and insured. The city asks you to check with its Building Department that a contractor is properly licensed before you hire, and I'd encourage you to do it.

On a pool deck, the part that matters most is the part you won't see once it's poured, so ask any contractor how they'll prep the ground. When you're ready, get in touch and I'll come take a look.

Pool decks, permits and the ground in Carlsbad

In Carlsbad, the Building Department issues permits and requires one before construction starts, and for most work the city also wants a Drainage and Grading Permit before land is graded, paved, dug out or filled. A pool deck involves most of that, so before we start, we check with the city on what your job needs and take care of the permit paperwork that falls to us.

The Guadalupe Mountains near Carlsbad are karst, ground where caves and sinkholes form as the surface drops into voids in salt rocks like gypsum, which are common in this corner of the state. That's one more reason I dig down and look at what's under a deck instead of trusting a raked-flat surface, and we bring the same care to jobs across Carlsbad and in Artesia.

Questions about pool decks in Carlsbad

How much does a concrete pool deck cost in Carlsbad?

Across the US, an installed concrete pool deck usually costs about $10.10 to $12.40 per square foot, so treat that as a national starting point, not a Carlsbad price. Your number moves with the deck's size, any tear-out, the ground prep and the finish, and I'll give you your own figure at the estimate.

Can my old pool deck be resurfaced instead of replaced?

It can be, if the slab underneath is still solid, because resurfacing puts a new protective coating or overlay over the deck you already have, whether it's concrete, wood or stone. If the deck has sunk or cracked through, the problem is in the ground, and a new pour is usually the better use of your money.

When is the best time to pour a concrete pool deck?

A calm day beats a hot, windy one, because national hot-weather concreting guidance says heat makes cement harden faster and fresh concrete lose moisture faster, which can hurt the finished deck. The same guidance says wind makes heat and dry air harder on a pour and that drying trouble can happen at cooler temperatures too, so we plan each pour around the conditions, not just the season.

How long does a new concrete pool deck take before I can use it?

You'll stay off it until it has cured, and I'll tell you the timing for your deck before we leave. Rushing it is how a top ends up weak and dusty, so the wait is worth it.

Will my new concrete pool deck crack?

It may get a hairline crack along a control joint, and that's normal, because the joints are there to give the slab a planned place to crack. What isn't normal is a crack wandering across the middle of a section or one that opens wide, and that's what the packed base, the steel and cutting the joints on time are there to prevent.

How do I find out if my Carlsbad property is in a floodplain?

Contact one of the city's Certified Floodplain Managers through the Planning and Regulation Department, and they can tell you whether your property sits in one. Large parts of Carlsbad lie in the Pecos River, Dark Canyon or Hackberry Draw floodplains, and the city requires a Floodplain Development Permit for construction in one, so it's worth knowing before we plan your deck.

  • Concrete steps construction

A deck that meets a slope or a raised doorway needs steps sized for wet, bare feet and set at even heights so nobody misjudges one.

  • Slab foundation building

Anything with walls and a roof near the pool, from a cabana to a pump house, needs a slab built to carry a building, not just foot traffic.
