How I came to pour concrete in Carlsbad

I grew up pouring concrete next to my dad on his crew, and in 2020 I started Carlsbad Concrete here in Carlsbad. Homeowners call us for driveways, patios, steps and walks, and builders and property owners call us for slabs, footings and lots. Whatever the job, I come out to look at it and give the estimate myself, and then my crew and I do the work together.

The part I enjoy most is explaining the job before we start. A slab with the ground, the joints and the curing planned out holds up better than one that's rushed. Here in Carlsbad, a good share of the city sits in the Pecos River, Dark Canyon and Hackberry Draw floodplains, so where the water runs off your slab matters too. I'd rather you understand your concrete before it goes in, so a hairline crack along a joint later doesn't worry you, because that's normal. If you'd like me to look at your job, send us a note.

What working with us looks like on your job

These are the things you'll notice from the estimate through the pour. They come from how I learned the trade and from what keeps a driveway, patio or slab sound for the long haul.

  • You hear every choice before the pour

Before we pour, I walk you through the choices on your job, from how thick the slab runs to where the joints go, so you know what you're paying for and why. Nothing on your concrete gets decided over your head.

  • The person who quoted you is on site

I give the estimate myself, and then I work right alongside the crew. If a question comes up on pour day, the person who answered it at your estimate is standing right there.

  • Time goes into the parts you can't see

We dig out and pack the subgrade, the ground your slab sits on, cut control joints so the slab cracks along lines we chose, and give it time to cure and harden before you use it, because that's where most concrete trouble starts. If the budget gets tight, I'd trim the finish before the base, since a nice surface won't save a slab that settles with the dirt under it.

Licensing and registration for concrete work here

  • New Mexico contractor license

Fully licensed and insured. The state requires a license for anyone doing or offering construction work, and the state licensing division issues those licenses and enforces the rules, so ask any contractor you're considering whether they hold one.

  • City of Carlsbad business registration

Contractors working in Carlsbad need a city business registration on top of the state license, and we're glad to have you check us with the city before you hire. Before work starts, we check with the city's Building Department, which handles permits and inspections, and we take care of the permit paperwork that falls to us.
